Dr. James C. Johnston

Dr. James C. Johnston is an internationally renowned neurologist and attorney specializing in global health. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Board Certified in Neurology with Additional Certification in Neurorehabilitation, a Fellow of the Australasian College of Legal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Legal Medicine.

He completed his neurology training under Dr. Frank Yatsu at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, serving as co-Chief Resident during his final year. He has held staff positions at a number of hospitals in Texas and Washington, and served as medical director of a rehabilitation hospital.

In addition to his private practice over the past 30 years, Dr. Johnston serves as an Honorary Professor of Neurology at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, and is the Founding Partner of Global Neurology Consultants, an international group of neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroethicists dedicated to advancing sustainable evidence-based neurological care.

Dr. Johnston established the nonprofit organization Global NeuroCare to further advance neurological services in developing regions, especially sub-Saharan Africa and particularly Ethiopia. Global NeuroCare is accredited by the World Health Organization, affiliated with the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa, and holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC.

Dr. Johnston has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials, reports and letters, and a dozen book chapters in leading treatises on medical law that have been cited throughout the world. A number of these articles describe unique conditions, and Dr. Johnston has published some of the original writings on legal issues impacting neurology. Additionally, he has presented and published several statements at the United Nations contributing to a greater understanding of how to improve health care in Africa.
